Let’s Cheese The Day

A climate newsletter talking about cheese? I’ll brie-lieve it when I see it, so keep reading to find out why I’m making cheese puns, why Wales has scrapped new road projects, how the U.S. aims to make their EV charging network accessible for all cars, and more.

English Cheesemaker Makes World’s First Carbon Neutral Cheese 🧀

😊 The Good News - Wykes Farms recently launched the first carbon neutral cheese in the world, and it’s an aged cheddar. The Somerset-based cheesemaker has spent the last 15 years reducing their emissions, and their facilities run on 100% renewable energy as well as an anaerobic digester.

🥾 Follow This Path - I’m not afraid to say I love cheese. But what I don’t like is its environmental impact – which is why I’ve cut down on my consumption in recent years. The reality of the matter is that not everyone can go fully planted based, so I hope more cheesemakers adopt sustainable practices, as other cheese alternatives hit the market. We’re going to need both to decarbonize our food systems.

Fishing Communities Establish Marine Protected Areas in Chile 🐟

🥾 Follow This Path - It’s refreshing to see the positive impact communities working together can have on the planet, and I strongly believe the grassroots approach countries like Chile are taking will help protect more of our oceans than sweeping mandates with little to no community input. I commend the communities in the Valparaiso region and hope they establish more MPAs along the coastline.

Biden Aims To Make EV Chargers Work For All Cars 🚗

😊 The Good News - The Biden Administration has issued rules for establishing the national electric charger network nearly eight months after the project was first announced. Following in the UK’s footsteps, chargers will have to be available for all cars – not just certain models. The charging stations will also have to be predominantly made of American-manufactured materials, per the 2021 Infrastructure Bill.

🥾 Follow This Path - Expansive charging networks will only work if every car can charge at every charging station, so I’m in support of not letting individual companies dictate who can charge and where. I also hope most of these chargers will be installed in more rural areas where sustainable transportation alternatives like public transit and bike lanes aren’t readily available, because we should strive to make this approach an inclusive one.

President of the World Bank Resigns Amid Pressure From Activists

🥾 Follow This Path - The World Bank has the potential to revolutionize climate action and justice projects across the globe, but up until now the organization has not lived up to that potential. I hope Malpass’ successor will be a climate advocate because, in order to address climate change, developing countries are in need of both climate funding and reparations.

Wales Abandons New Road Projects For Planet 🌎

😊 The Good News - The Welsh government has scrapped all major road building projects in order to help the country decarbonize because a continued reliance on cars won’t be enough to combat climate change. Instead, Wales will prioritize projects that improve public transportation, sidewalks, and cycling infrastructure.

🥾 Follow This Path - As a former environmental and community planner, I was stoked to read this news and hope my state can do the same one day. While improvements and maintenance of existing roads is needed, we need to shift our focus towards building infrastructure for walking, biking, and public transportation. This will obviously require lots of planning and funding, but Wales has taken a major step towards sustainability.
